I just had to write and share our experience with the Comprehension Upgrade course. My son, Nathan, who is 16 years old and has Down Syndrome just completed the course and he did it in just over a month! He has been a fairly good reader as far as the mechanics of reading go but there was definitely a lot of room for improvement in his comprehension of what he was reading. Yesterday he completed the course and received a gold certificate.

I can’t tell you how thrilled he was. I think that this was his greatest accomplishment so far in his own eyes. He worked so hard at getting 100% in each level. I have never seen him so motivated to excel in anything in his life. It was amazing how the reward of seeing his chart fill up to the top line with colour kept him plugging away at it. The format kept him interested and although he hates to make mistakes I didn’t find him getting too frustrated because he knew he could go back right away and get it right the next time, or the next time after that.

I notice a marked improvement in his level of understanding of written material now. We home school, so we have reading curriculum that requires him to read a few paragraphs on a given subject and then answer questions on that material. He has gone from getting an average of 25-50% correct to several times of getting 100% the first try. He is just so very thrilled and as his parent I don’t think there is much greater of gift to give your children than the gift of reading.

A group of 57 students Grades 6 to 8 completed Math Upgrade lessons as part of math intervention classes in Fall 2007. The students were assessed at the elementary level in math before the intervention. Each week, students completed 2 to 3 sessions of 40 minutes length with the course. By the end of the semester, students had gained an average of 1.6 years on the STAR MATH assessment. All but one student showed improvement, with 68% showing gains of 1 year or more.
